Energy from Waste Facilities

Energy Production

Energy-from-waste facilities convert non-recyclable waste into usable energy through processes like combustion, gasification, or pyrolysis. During combustion, waste is burned at high temperatures, producing steam. This steam drives turbines to generate electricity, which can be fed into the power grid. Some facilities also utilise combined heat and power (CHP) systems, where the excess heat produced during electricity generation is captured and used for district heating, industrial processes, or other local energy needs.

Advanced Technology

New advanced technologies are enabling energy-from-waste (EfW) facilities to operate with little to no emissions, making them much cleaner and more sustainable. High-efficiency combustion systems now burn waste at higher temperatures, ensuring complete combustion and reducing the production of harmful byproducts. Advanced flue gas treatment technologies, such as selective catalytic reduction and fabric filters, capture and neutralise pollutants like nitrogen oxides, sulfur oxides, and dioxins, removing up to 99% of these substances. Additionally, carbon capture and storage (CCS) technologies are being integrated into some facilities, capturing CO2 before it can be released. Combined with continuous emissions monitoring systems, these innovations ensure that emissions are kept to an absolute minimum, supporting cleaner energy production from waste.

Waste Reduction

Energy-from-waste (EfW) facilities play a crucial role in reducing the volume of waste sent to landfills. By converting non-recyclable waste into energy, these facilities can decrease the amount of waste that would otherwise occupy landfill space by up to 90%. This reduction not only conserves valuable land but also helps mitigate the environmental issues associated with landfills, such as groundwater contamination, methane emissions, and long-term land degradation. By diverting waste from landfills, EfW facilities contribute to a more sustainable waste management system, making better use of resources and minimising the environmental footprint of waste disposal.
